about
As told in Spanish, never let someone else tell you that you are not already great. A conversation between a young girl and her mother, after the girl endures bumper stickers, signs, and hats, that suggest the woes of America are hers to bear.
lyrics
¿He hecho algo malo yo?
Already Great (English translation)
Maria lives with her family, down in San Bernardino
Every day she walks to school she’s now 8 years old
She learns and plays all day, and gathers her books at the end
Says good bye to her teachers, says good bye to her friends
And along the way, as she walks home, she hears and she sees
People talking to each other, about all sorts of things
Signs along the road, hats on heads, stickers on cars
Talking about how bad it is, talking about walls
Then at dinner she helps her mama, set the plates and the food
Her mama says, how are you my child, was your day good?
And Maria says mama, are things so bad? Is it worse now than before?
Did we do something to make people mad? Did we do something wrong?
And her mama pulls her in, and kisses her tiny face
No, my child, she says, we will keep you safe
You have your whole life ahead and a heart that’s full and bright
Even though some people carry anger, some people carry spite
But you, my little one, you are not to blame
And if you hear someone, who speaks with anger or hate
Remember, my child, you don’t need to change
Because deep inside, you’re already great.
